24/09/1951Interesado por el séptimo arte desde pequeño, Pedro Almodóvar se lanzó a conseguir su sueño de hacer cine a los 16 años, cuando se trasladó a Madrid con la intención de estudiar y labrarse una carrera. Durante años trabajó en diferentes empleos y ahorró dinero suficiente para comprarse una cámara de súper ocho: con ella empezó a rodar sus primeros cortos, que le sirvieron de aprendizaje como cineasta.
En aquellos tiempos, Almodóvar alternaba sus inicios en el cine con otras actividades artÃsticas: escritor (guiones de cómic, colaboraciones en periódicos y revistas underground, novelas), actor teatral (formó parte del grupo Los Goliardos, donde conoció a Carmen Maura), músico (creó un grupo de punk-glam-rock junto a McNamara)…
Pedro incluso escribió por encargo una fotonovela para la revista
El VÃbora, que más tarde servirÃa como base para su primer largometraje: Pepi, Luci, Bom y otras chicas del montón (1980). Pese a la falta de medios con la que se rodó, el innovador estilo del cineasta causó sensación y convirtió el film en pelÃcula de culto.Dos años después llegó Laberinto de pasiones, que fue muy bien acogido por el público y le convirtió en un referente del cine español. Con su tercer film, Matador, Almodóvar empezó a darse a conocer en el extranjero. Pero fue la comedia Mujeres al borde de un ataque de nervios (1987) la que le dio la fama definitiva: además de batir récords de taquilla, recibió varios premios nacionales e internacionales y fue nominada al Oscar al mejor film extranjero.
El director manchego pasó a ser una de las figuras imprescindibles del cine español, y sus obras posteriores recibieron una excelente acogida por parte del público, como demostraron los buenos resultados de Ãtame o Tacones lejanos.
Aunque el gran momento de Almodóvar estaba por llegar. En 1999, Todo sobre mi madre alcanzó un éxito sin precedentes, se hizo con infinidad de premios y obtuvo el Oscar al mejor film de habla no inglesa. Algo similar ocurrió en 2002 con Hable con ella, que también logró varios premios internacionales y le valió al cineasta otro Oscar, esta vez al mejor guión original, y una nominación al mejor director.
En la filmografÃa de Almodóvar destacan también Entre tinieblas, ¿Qué he hecho yo para merecer esto?, La ley del deseo, Kika, La flor de mi secreto , Carne trémula, Todo sobre mi madre, Hable con ella , La mala educación. Su trabajo más reciente es Volver, con Penélope Cruz

Most people who know of the famous director and screenwriter Pedro Almodóvar would recognize him as the most influential Spanish filmmaker alive today. Almodóvar uses his satirical, wickedly poignant sense of humor to expose and break down social stereotypes while at the same celebrating and helping to shape Spanish national identity. His films have not only earned him numerous national and international awards – including a Best Original Screenplay Oscar in 2002 for Hable Con Ella - they have changed the way people like me think about movies.
But the real reason his story is so inspiring has less to do with the awards he has won or his choice of profession than one might think. Although Almodóvar faced many obstacles growing up (being born into abject poverty, living in Franco-controlled Spain), he triumphed over them through ingenuity, determination and sheer force of will. Against all odds, Almodóvar overcame adversity and made himself into the person he is today. That’s why he is my hero.
When he moved to Madrid as a teenager in the mid ’60s, Almodóvar realized just how difficult it would be to pursue his dream of becoming a filmmaker. Not only was he too poor to attend the university, but registration at the Official School of Cinematic Arts was impossible because the school had been closed down by Franco’s government. Almodóvar took a job as an administrative assistant to a Spanish telephone company, and finally earned enough to buy a hand-held Super 8 camera.
Throughout the 1970’s, Almodóvar devoted himself to making short films with the help of his friends and whatever money they managed to scrape together. In 1980, he released his first feature-length film. Seven years later, he founded his own production company. To this day, Almodóvar’s movies are shown in cinemas around the world. He continues to be renowned as one of the most talented and creative storytellers of his time. His life continues to serve as an inspiration to all those – filmmaker and non-filmmaker, alike – who need a little help believing that through hard work and perseverance, anything is possible.
